The ‘plug and play’ is a solution to very complex rooms. This takes several components, organizing them so that they can be pieced together on site. The prefabricated pod is reduced to one easy unit which is ready to be installed.

A company in 2004 was founded in the U.S called Eggrock LLC, at the time it was said to have been the only manufacturer around for pre-built hotel bathrooms. Eggrocks’ first customer was Holiday Inn Express, where they knocked off two months of the construction time due to their ability to install all 93 bathrooms within four days.

Barrett, in turn, took this opportunity and applied the same manufacturing technology to the hotel construction.

Bathrooms are known for construction delays and quality issues. They are said to be the most problematic areas of the hotel construction. As the bathrooms within the generic hotel are so small and compacted, getting up to eight trades to work at different times during the construction phase results in different timings. For example if the shower trays are installed into the bathrooms these become easily damaged and in many cases a good 10 percent have to be replaced which results in construction delays.

The prefabricated bathrooms eliminate these problems due to the environment of the construction, because they are done within a factory controlled condition when the pod is delivered to the construction site. The units are ready to be craned off of the lorry and attached to the hotel’s plumbing and electrical system.

The process usually undertaken to installing these pods begins by the architect or designer meeting with the manufactures and presenting 2 dimensional plans. The manufacturers will go onto site and specify where all pipe holes are needed to go together with tolerances to make sure that the pods will fit during installation on site. Next, a test unit is then built for approval. Once approved by the client, construction of the pods begin. The pods are then stored in a warehouse until they are transported by lorry – normally holding 5 pods at a time on demand by the customer.
